Department of Earth and Ecosystem Sciences
Welcome

The new Department of Earth and Ecosystem Sciences was formed on January 1, 2010, by merging the Department of Geology and the Department of Physical Geography & Ecosystems Analysis.

Our staff members are engaged in education and research spanning a very wide field of study, ranging from the Earth's oldest geological history to ongoing processes and changes in our landscape.

The department consists of two administrative sections, the Division of Geology and the Division of Physical Geography & Ecosystems Analysis. In addition, the department also hosts the GIS Centre, a centre for the analysis of geospatial data.

We are currently working on the design and implementation of the new department's web site. In the meantime you can find information about our education programs, research, personnel etc by following the links in the panel to the left. You can also use the links above to reach the web pages of the two sections directly.

Do you need urgent information about courses and classes?

Energy exchange in sub-arctic and arctic ecosystems

The PhD project will investigate the surface-atmosphere energy exchange in northern high latitude ecosystems with focus on sub-arctic and arctic areas. The student will be responsible for measurement and analyses of energy exchange in field sites in Greenland, Svalbard and Northern Sweden. Data from other ongoing measurements such as ICOS ecosystem stations (www.icos-infrastructure.eu and www.icos-sweden.se) or similar will also be available and used in the analyses. The project is part of the Nordic Centre of Excellence DEFROST (www.ncoe-defrost.org) work package no 1 (WP 1) on ‘Cryosphere and Ecosystem Energy and Carbon Exchange’. There will be collaboration with other PhD projects in WP 1 which are more focused on trace gas exchanges. Application deadline: June 17 2011.More information can be found here.

One PhD studentship on ecosystem-atmosphere modelling of pan-Arctic methane exchange under present and future climate

The research will be based on the further development of an advanced regional climate-ecosystem model and its application to across the Arctic. Simulations under recent historical and potential future climate forcing will evaluate the potential for coupled changes in climate, vegetation patterns, ecosystem hydrology, permafrost distribution and trace-gas (CO2 and CH4) exchange of high-latitude ecosystems to feed back to the climate system, amplifying or attenuating climate change regionally and globally. Application deadline: August 6, 2011. For more information, click here.
